Bed bugs can cause huge problems in homes and commercial settings
Here are their vital statistics:
- Bed bug adults are reddish brown in colour from 4-5mm long and 1.5 to 3mm wide. Engorged adults tend to be swollen and dull red in colour.
- Eggs are white, oval and about 1mm long.
- Humans are the preferred host, although bed bugs feed on a range of warm-blooded animals.
- They hide during daylight hours and emerge at night to feed, injecting saliva into their victim which is what causes the delayed itching and swelling.
- Adults can survive for up to 2 months without food, but under certain circumstances can live a year or more without feeding.
